Real Yamaha FM Chip vs Emulation: An Honest Comparison

Should you play a real Yamaha FM chip or a software emulator? Modern emulators are very good, and we say so. This page compares both honestly, so you can choose what fits your music. Kasser Synths builds the DAFM range around real chips: the DAFM Genesis (YM2612 / YM3438), the DAFM Arcade (YM2151) and the DAFM Blaster (YMF262 OPL3).

Where the sound is made: real chip vs software emulation.

How good is FM emulation today?

Very good. The best cores are cycle-accurate. Nuked-OPN2, for example, is a YM3438 / YM2612 emulator based on die shot reverse engineering of the chip, and Nuked-OPM does the same job for the YM2151. A well-made plugin built on cores like these can sound extremely close to the hardware. If accuracy on paper is your only goal, software is a valid choice.

Real chip vs emulation at a glance

Sound sourceThe original silicon generates every noteA model of the chip running on your CPU
Output stageThe real analog path: the YM2612 built-in DAC with its ladder effect, or a separate YM3012 or YAC512 DACDepends on how well the emulator models the DAC and output
PolyphonyFixed by the chip, like the original hardwareCan often run several instances

Why choose the real chip

  • You play the actual sound source. The DAFM sends your MIDI to the same Yamaha chip family used in Genesis / Mega Drive consoles, arcade boards and 90s PC sound cards
  • The real output stage. On the DAFM Genesis you choose the YM2612, with its gritty ladder effect, or the cleaner and louder YM3438. The Arcade and Blaster use a separate YM3012 or YAC512 DAC
  • A dedicated instrument. No plugin windows or audio buffers: plug in MIDI, edit with the encoders and play
  • Every parameter on MIDI CC, so you can sequence and automate the chip from your DAW or hardware sequencer
  • Your patches travel. The Genesis and Arcade save presets as DMP files for DefleMask, and the Blaster saves OPLI files for the OPL3 Bank Editor

When emulation is the better pick

  • You need many voices at once, or many chips in one project
  • You work only inside the computer and never perform with hardware
  • Your budget is tight: a free emulator is a great way to learn FM
  • You want the exact sound of a specific console revision and an emulator that models it

You can also use both: emulation to sketch, the real chip to record and perform. Patches can move between the two through formats like DMP.

FAQ

Are emulators inaccurate?
The best ones are very accurate. The difference with a real chip is less about errors and more about the instrument: real silicon, real output stage and a standalone, hands-on box.

Are the chips in DAFM synths new?
They are vintage Yamaha chips that may have been resurfaced at origin. We test every chip so it works perfectly in the synth.

Does a DIY kit include the chip?
Yes. All DAFM kits always include the chip.

Who pays import duties?
Import duties or taxes, if any, are paid by the buyer.
